What is muira puama, and why is it called potency wood?
Muira puama is a common name for Ptychopetalum olacoides. A 2020 review describes it as a popular Amazonian tree of the Olacaceae family, also known in Brazil as marapuama or muirapuama, and says native communities have used its roots and bark in traditional medicine.
The USDA's ethnobotanical database lists Muira Puama, Potency Wood and Potenzholz as common names for the same plant.
Potency Wood is also a product name in shops. On Spicy Cubes, the label lists muira puama extract (6:1) by name. A review describes alcoholic infusions, mixtures of extracts and pills among the preparations.
This guide is part of our plant evidence series, which starts with what human studies measured on maca. Spicy Cubes gummies are sold by Xinop LLC, trading as Satiovex, and the label lists muira puama. What are Spicy Cubes explains the name.

What have human studies on muira puama examined?
Two papers describe human studies of products that contain muira puama, and two 2020 reviews cover the plant. Both studies used mixtures. The table lists design, size and the authors' notes.

Authors' notes
Waynberg and Brewer, Advances in Therapy, 2000
202 healthy women who complained of low sex drive
Herbal vX, a product of muira puama and ginkgo. The women rated their sex life themselves before and after 1 month.
The abstract mentions no comparison group. The authors call the findings initial and say a double-blind study is planned.
Nguyen, Rajfer and Shaheen, Translational Andrology and Urology, 2018
54 middle-aged men from a urology clinic: 53 completed the baseline questionnaire, then 32, 22 and 16 at months 1, 2 and 3
Revactin, a capsule of ginger, muira puama, Paullinia cupana and L-citrulline, for up to 3 months. A questionnaire on sexual health at baseline and monthly.
Every man took the product; no comparison group is described. The paper says dropout was high, mostly men who went back to prescription medicines. One author is a stockholder in the company that supplied the product, which has a patent pending on it.
Srivatsav et al., Sexual Medicine Reviews, 2020 (review)
Review of common ingredients in supplements sold for male sexual health problems
Describes the two studies above as its human studies of muira puama.
Very limited literature; further studies needed to determine the effects of muira puama alone.
Brunetti et al., Pharmaceuticals, 2020 (review)
Review of the adverse effects of 15 herbal sexual enhancers
For muirapuama, only preclinical reports (mice) and no clinical reports.
Few data on side effects of several plants; controlled clinical studies needed.
Neither study used muira puama alone or a product with the Spicy Cubes formula. What the evidence shows for each plant in our gummy has the wider picture.
What does research say about muira puama for women?
The only human study in women that we opened is the 2000 one above: 202 women who rated themselves before and after one month on a muira puama and ginkgo product. Its abstract mentions no comparison group, and the 2020 supplement-ingredients review describes no later study in women.
How are muira puama supplements labelled?
Three details explain most of the differences between muira puama labels:
- The name and the plant. The botanical name is Ptychopetalum olacoides; the sources we opened use several names: muira puama, muirapuama, marapuama and potency wood.
- An amount or a blend total. A panel can list an amount for muira puama itself or a total for a blend; a ratio such as 6:1 describes the extract.
- Everything else in the product. Both human studies used mixtures of several ingredients.
Where this meets our label
Spicy Cubes gummies are sold by Xinop LLC, trading as Satiovex (see the 30-count pouch label and prices). The label lists muira puama extract (6:1) inside an 810 mg blend of muira puama, epimedium, maca and ginger extracts per 3 g gummy. Spicy Cubes is a food supplement, so no medical claims are made for it. For the other plants in the blend, see horny goat weed (epimedium) and horny goat weed with maca; the label amounts per gummy are set out line by line.
Ingredient guides: what the research says, plant by plant
Maca root
50 mg per gummy on the label, plus a 4:1 extract in the blend. We read eight human trials and report what each measured.
Ginger root
A 4:1 extract in the blend. Chili pepper is listed separately at 30 mg per gummy.
Good to know before you start
When to ask your doctor or pharmacist first
For adults 18 and over. Follow the directions on the pouch. Ask your doctor or pharmacist first if you are pregnant or nursing, take any medicine (especially nitrates or blood-pressure medicine; the NHS also names statins, antidepressants, diabetes medicines, blood thinners and hormonal contraception) or have a medical condition such as kidney or liver problems. Research on muira puama on its own is still early.
What are the side effects of muira puama?
The record is short, and the reports below concern products that mix muira puama with other ingredients.
- 2018 study, four ingredients. Five of 54 men reported side effects such as dyspepsia, heartburn and migraine, none considered severe. One man had a heart attack in month 3; the authors say his cardiologist judged it not due to the product.
- 2000 study, two plants. The authors describe compliance and tolerability as good.
- Animal findings. The 2020 adverse-effects review found only preclinical reports for muirapuama: impaired short- and long-term memory and reduced movement in mice. It found no clinical reports.
- Interactions. No source we opened reports how muira puama interacts with medicines. The same review calls drug interactions of herbal products sold for sexual use, as a group, more concerning, because they are likely used with other extracts or medicines.
Some supplements sold for male sexual problems are contaminated with PDE5 inhibitors and may contain unreported compounds, according to the 2020 supplement-ingredients review.
What the NHS says about herbal medicines
The NHS page on herbal medicines does not mention muira puama or food supplements. Its general advice is to ask a doctor or pharmacist first if you:
- Are under 18. The NHS says herbal medicines are not recommended for children, as not enough is known about them.
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding. The NHS says you should not take herbal medicines if you are.
- Have kidney or liver problems. The NHS lists them too.
- Take any medicine, including ones you buy without a prescription. The NHS says statins, antidepressants, diabetes medicines, blood pressure medicines, blood thinners and hormonal contraception do not mix well with herbal medicines, and to check first with a pharmacist.
Tell any doctor or healthcare professional treating you if you take a herbal product, as the NHS advises, and bring its Supplement Facts.

How we checked this page
For muira puama, we opened the human studies and reviews listed below and report what they measured, not what the plant will do.
