Horny goat weed with maca in short
- The pairing is common. In NIH's Dietary Supplement Label Database, 494 of 938 records that list horny goat weed or epimedium also list maca (52.7%).
- Each plant has been studied on its own. Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) says only a few small human trials of maca exist and that more studies are needed to verify the traditional use of epimedium, which it lists as horny goat weed.
- The search for the pair. A Europe PMC search on 7 October 2026 for the two plants together returned 9 records, none typed as a clinical trial.

Why are horny goat weed and maca sold together?
MSK describes maca as native to Peru and epimedium as traditionally used in herbal formulas. The label data below show how common the pairing is.
We searched NIH's Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD), which holds supplement label records, for "horny goat weed" on 5 October 2026 and counted the records that also list other plants.

What have studies examined for each plant?
Maca
A 2010 systematic review found four small randomized trials (8 to 57 people each, 131 in all) of 1.5 to 3.5 g a day for 2 to 12 weeks, measuring self-rated and questionnaire scores for sexual health. The authors called the evidence limited and said the number, size and quality of the trials were too limited for firm conclusions. None assessed adverse effects.
Horny goat weed (epimedium)
MSK says epimedium is used traditionally in herbal formulas and that more studies are needed to verify such effects. It has not been studied in clinical trials for fatigue, and one small randomized trial in women long after menopause looked at bone loss. Other trials mix it into botanical "recipes", so its own contribution cannot be separated.
Has anyone tested horny goat weed with maca?
A Europe PMC search on 7 October 2026 looked for epimedium, horny goat weed, icariin or barrenwort together with maca or Lepidium meyenii in the title or abstract. It returned 9 records: 4 patents (2003 to 2010), 3 reviews (2011, 2014, 2015) and 2 other articles (2017, 2021).
None is typed as a randomized or clinical trial, and no title describes a human trial of the pair. The search covered the titles and abstracts held in one database.
How do you read a horny goat weed with maca label?
However a product is named (horny goat weed with maca, goat weed with maca, maca and horny goat weed), the Supplement Facts panel shows what is inside. We opened three capsule labels that list both plants: one retailer page (label 1) and two NIH database records, 271844 (label 2) and 289998 (label 3). Brands are not named.

Where Spicy Cubes fits
The Spicy Cubes label
Spicy Cubes gummies on this site are sold by Xinop LLC, trading as Satiovex. Each 3 g gummy lists chili pepper 30 mg, maca root 50 mg and an 810 mg blend of extracts: muira puama (6:1), epimedium (10:1), maca (4:1) and ginger (4:1). Every amount is printed on the label. Maca appears twice (a 50 mg row and an extract in the blend), epimedium once.
That makes it a four-extract blend plus maca root and chili pepper. Spicy Cubes is a food supplement, so no medical claims are made for it; this page reports what studies of the plants measured. What 6:1 means on a label, as in our muira puama extract, is covered in a separate guide.
What is in each Spicy Cubes gummy shows the label table, and what the Spicy Cubes name covers explains the name. Our pouch: Spicy Cubes gummies, 30 count: packs and prices.

A 4:1 extract in the blend. Chili pepper is listed separately at 30 mg per gummy.
Good to know before you start
For adults 18 and over. Follow the directions on the pouch. Ask your doctor or pharmacist first if you are pregnant or nursing, take any medicine (especially nitrates or blood-pressure medicine), have heart disease or a hormone-sensitive cancer, or have any other medical condition. Memorial Sloan Kettering lists these points for the two plants.
- Heart disease. MSK (epimedium, April 2023) says to avoid epimedium if you have heart disease and describes one patient with heart disease who had a rapid irregular heartbeat. Its maca page (June 2023) has no heart statement.
- Hormone-sensitive cancer. MSK says to avoid epimedium, and to talk to your provider about maca.
- Medicines. MSK mentions aromatase inhibitors and CYP3A4 medicines for epimedium (relevance not known) and losartan for maca, in hypertensive rats (relevance not yet determined). If you are unsure which medicines to mention, say everything you take; a pharmacist can check the whole list.
- Lab tests. MSK says maca may interfere with testosterone lab tests, so tell your provider first if you are due for one.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding. MSK says maca may not be safe if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Its epimedium page has no statement on either.
- Other plants on labels. Of the 267 on-market records that list both plants, 50 also list yohimbe. One label we opened (label 2 below) says its product "contains yohimbine, which may cause an elevation in blood pressure and heart rate".
- Hidden ingredients. FDA warns that many products sold for sexual health are likely to contain hidden ingredients, and says its list covers only a small fraction of them. This is about a product category, not either plant. Findings that name horny goat weed products are in horny goat weed side effects and interactions.
Research on the plants on their own is still early. Details: Spicy Cubes side effects.
