When to take horny goat weed in short
- Studies. A PubMed search on 7 October 2026 looked for human studies that compared times of day or food. The one blood-level study we opened followed single doses for 48 hours.
- Labels. Three single-ingredient labels in NIH's label database say morning with or without food, between meals, and with a meal.
- Spicy Cubes. Take Spicy Cubes as directed on the pouch; the label is the instruction to follow.
For the plant itself, see what is known about epimedium; for the other plant in many blends, our maca root guide; for the name, a plain guide to the gummy and the name.

What do product labels say about timing?
On 7 October 2026 we opened three labels in NIH's Dietary Supplement Label Database. Each is a capsule with horny goat weed as its only ingredient.
Label (NIH database id)
What it says about timing
337934 (entered 2025)
"healthy adults take one capsule daily in the morning with or without food or as recommended by a qualified healthcare professional"
248253 (entered 2021)
"take 2 capsules daily between meals, or as directed by your physician"
286192 (entered 2023)
"For adult men, take two (2) capsules daily, preferably with a meal."
The three labels differ on food and on whether a time is given at all. FDA says it generally does not approve dietary supplement labeling before use, so these directions are each seller's own.
What do studies and reference pages say about timing?
A PubMed search on 7 October 2026 for the plant's names with time of day, dosing time or timing returned 1 record, a review of animal studies. A second search, with food or fasting in humans, returned 5: four animal or laboratory papers and one trial that mentions fasting blood samples, not food at dosing. None of these is a human study of when to take it.

More detail
RxList, Horny Goat Weed (a reference page)
Lists "2 caps (1,000 mg, may vary with manufacturer) orally per day" and "3-4 caps orally 90 minutes before sexual activity".
The page does not name a study or give a date.
A man started an Epimedium supplement bought online. Cramps began when he started it, and he went to an emergency department with severe muscle spasms a month later.
The report gives no dose, strength, frequency or time of day.
Blood-level study, Planta Medica (2019)
30 healthy men took single doses of a standardized extract; blood was sampled for 48 hours. Icariside II peaked at about 4.1 to 4.3 hours, desmethylicaritin at about 24 hours.
The abstract does not mention food, fasting or time of day. It reports blood levels of one extract in men.
What does the Spicy Cubes label say about timing?
Take Spicy Cubes as directed on the pouch; the label is the instruction to follow.
Each 3 g gummy lists chili pepper 30 mg, maca root 50 mg and an 810 mg blend of muira puama, epimedium, maca and ginger extracts, and every amount is printed on the label. Spicy Cubes is a food supplement, so no medical claims are made for it. Packs of 30, 90, 150 and 300 gummies come with free tracked shipping and a 30-day money-back guarantee. Ingredient guides: what the research says, plant by plant
Maca root
50 mg per gummy on the label, plus a 4:1 extract in the blend. We read eight human trials and report what each measured.
Muira puama
A 6:1 extract in the 810 mg blend. The guide sets out what studies of the plant examined.
Epimedium (horny goat weed)
A 10:1 extract in the blend. The human trials we found looked at bone loss.
Ginger root
A 4:1 extract in the blend. Chili pepper is listed separately at 30 mg per gummy.
Good to know before you start
For adults 18 and over. Follow the directions on the pouch. Ask your doctor or pharmacist before use if you are pregnant or nursing, take any medicine (especially nitrates or blood-pressure medicine) or have a medical condition. FDA advises talking to a doctor, pharmacist or other health care professional before deciding to purchase or use a dietary supplement, because some supplements might interact with medicines or other supplements. The sources we opened mention these points:
- Medicines. RxList says horny goat weed has moderate interactions with at least 26 drugs, which it does not list, and to check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting, stopping or changing the dosage of any medicine.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding. RxList lists pregnancy and lactation as contraindications, and two of the three labels name pregnancy or nursing. For women, see what studies in women examined.
- Health conditions and surgery. RxList lists cautions about bleeding, blood pressure and estrogen-sensitive conditions. One label says to discontinue use two weeks prior to surgery.
- On the labels. All three horny goat weed labels we opened tell readers to consult a doctor or other health care professional if they take medicines or have a medical condition.
A pharmacist can check your medicines for interactions. Bring the label and your medicine list. Research on the plant on its own is still early. Details: Spicy Cubes side effects.
