Horny goat weed benefits for women in short
- What was studied. Two placebo-controlled trials in women after menopause, lasting 6 weeks and 24 months, measured bone density or bone markers, blood levels and side effects.
- What the table lists. Each trial's participants, product, length and measures, plus a 2025 meta-analysis of 10 bone trials.
Spicy Cubes gummies are sold by Xinop LLC, trading as Satiovex; What are Spicy Cubes? explains the name. For the other plant in many of the same blends, see maca root research, trial by trial. For this plant on its own, see horny goat weed (epimedium) research.

What does horny goat weed do for women? What trials in women measured
The table names what each trial measured, in whom and for how long.
Trial
Who took part
What they took, and for how long
What was measured, and notes
Zhang, Qin and Shi (2007), Journal of Bone and Mineral Research
100 healthy women, 10 to 18 years after menopause; 85 finished
A flavonoid preparation made from the plant (60 mg icariin, 15 mg daidzein and 3 mg genistein a day) plus 300 mg calcium for everyone, against placebo; 24 months
Bone density, bone markers, blood estradiol and thickness of the womb lining. A mix, not the plant alone. The abstract states no limits and we did not read the full text.
Yong and colleagues (2021), Phytomedicine
58 healthy women after menopause, average age 57.9; all completed
A purified Epimedium extract, 740 mg a day, against placebo; 6 weeks, with blood checks 2 weeks after stopping
Main outcomes: safety and blood levels of the extract's breakdown products. Also a bone marker and a protein called TRAF6. The authors write that safety, mechanisms and therapeutic indications in humans are unknown.
Zhang and colleagues (2025), Frontiers in Medicine: meta-analysis
890 adults with osteoporosis in 10 trials; 3 of the trials enrolled women only
Epimedium alone or with other treatments, against placebo, calcium or other treatments; products and course lengths varied
Bone density, bone markers, back pain and side effects. Only 2 of the 10 trials were rated low risk of bias overall. The authors say more high-quality studies are needed.
The table is not a list of every study. It covers the two women-only trials that the meta-analysis rated low risk of bias overall. Its third women-only trial (2003, 25 women, Epimedium against conjugated estrogen) is known to us only from its table.
What do the sources say about other uses in women?
MSK describes two traditional uses without confirming either. Fatigue, it says, has not been studied in clinical trials. Sexual dysfunction is a traditional use in herbal formulas, and MSK says more studies are needed to verify such effects.
Does horny goat weed have estrogen-like activity?
Cells, animals and women have been studied differently, so the findings are kept apart.
- In cells. MSK says icariin, a main compound in the plant, raises estrogen production and the expression of aromatase, an enzyme involved in making estrogen, in laboratory experiments. Other studies credit estrogen-like activity to two related compounds, icaritin and desmethylicaritin, rather than to icariin itself.
- In animals. The 2026 review describes an extract given to female rats whose ovaries had been removed, and reports results for bone density and for blood estradiol and two bone proteins.
- In women. One trial measured blood estradiol and the thickness of the womb lining in women taking a flavonoid mix. Its abstract says neither was found to be changed in either group.
Can women take horny goat weed?
Spicy Cubes is for adults 18 and over; follow the directions on the pouch. For the plant on its own, MSK's public page shows no dose (its Dosage section is marked OneMSK Only), and WebMD says to follow the directions on the specific product or take it as your health care provider recommends.
The trials above used 740 mg a day of an extract for 6 weeks and a flavonoid mix for 24 months: the researchers' choices for their own products.
NCCIH's general advice for any supplement is to follow the instructions on the label. For food and time of day, see what labels and studies say about timing.

Spicy Cubes ingredients explains the label plant by plant, and the couples guide explains what "for couples" means on a label.

Good to know before you start
When to ask your doctor or pharmacist first
For adults 18 and over. Follow the directions on the pouch. Ask your doctor or pharmacist first if you are pregnant or nursing, take any medicine (especially nitrates, blood-pressure medicine, blood thinners, aromatase inhibitors, birth control or other hormone therapy) or have a medical condition such as heart disease or a hormone-sensitive cancer. If you have side effects, stop taking it and contact your health care provider, as NCCIH advises for any supplement. Research on horny goat weed on its own is still early: MSK calls the evidence limited, and a 2026 review says robust clinical evidence is still lacking.
What the sources name
The sources we opened name the groups below; a doctor or pharmacist who knows your medicines can check your case.
- If you have a hormone-sensitive cancer. MSK's patient page says epimedium may affect hormone levels and should be avoided in patients with hormone-sensitive cancers or heart disease, and its clinician section advises caution because it demonstrated estrogenic effects. WebMD asks you to tell your provider about hormone-sensitive cancer, such as breast or ovarian cancer, and about menopause.
- If you take cancer hormone treatment, hormone therapy or birth control. MSK says icariin raised the action of aromatase in lab work, which may reduce the effect of aromatase inhibitors such as anastrozole, exemestane and letrozole; clinical relevance is not known. WebMD lists hormone therapy and other medicines that contain hormones, such as birth control, among the things to discuss, and says the research on drug interactions is incomplete.
- If you have a heart condition or take nitrates. MSK describes a patient with heart disease in whom epimedium caused rapid irregular heartbeat and excitability. WebMD says to ask your provider about nitrates such as nitroglycerin and about PDE5-inhibitor medicines or medicines for pulmonary arterial hypertension.
- If you take a blood thinner or have surgery planned. NCCIH says certain dietary supplements may raise the risk of bleeding or affect your response to anesthesia. A pharmacist can check your medicines.
- If you take any prescription medicine. MSK says prolonged use of Epimedium can induce CYP3A4, an enzyme that processes many drugs, and that clinical relevance is not known. WebMD says to check with your health care provider before taking horny goat weed with any medicines.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
WebMD says it is not known if or how it could affect pregnancy or harm an unborn baby, or whether it passes into breast milk. MSK's page does not address either. NCCIH says many dietary supplements have not been studied in pregnant women, nursing mothers or children.
NCCIH also warns that some products promoted for sexual use, among others, may contain prescription drugs not allowed in dietary supplements. Horny goat weed side effects and interactions covers hidden drugs and the side effects on record.
Lab values reported in the trials
An abstract does not always match later accounts of the same trial. Yong's abstract reports no changes in liver, blood or kidney tests, while the meta-analysis describes a few values above the normal range, such as alkaline phosphatase more than 30% above the upper limit in four women. All later returned to normal.
